The drawers will be inset in the workbench frame, but overlaid on the drawer cabinet that I just put them in. So I pushed the box back the thickness of the plywood drawer fronts then secured it to the side and the top bracing with countersunk screws. Next I needed to cut the leftover shelf piece to fit the pull out tray. This is the perfect spot to use the Kreg Adaptive Cutting System. Basically you can use the track to cut straight lines or set stops 90 degrees to the track to make square cuts on wide panels like this.

It installs like any other drawer slide though and I attached it to the sides. Next I started cutting the parts for the drawers. I just have the two shallow drawers on the left and one deep drawer on the right. So I cut parts for six sides and their fronts and backs. Then I measured the drawer opening to size my fronts and backs. Drawer assembly is pretty straight forward using pocket holes on the fronts and backs. I no longer cut the grooves to hold the bottom panels, but go with a full sized bottom panel that is glued and stapled to the bottom.

Then I use a chamfer bit in my router to hit the sides of the drawers which hides the plywood bottom from sight. With the drawer boxes made I could get some custom storage going. This table is going to house my new CNC, the X-Carve from Inventables and all the bits and accessories that go with it.

So I wanted to break it in by making custom bit and tool holders to contain all those parts. I jumped into Easel , the Inventables software. I made a custom tray to fit all the clamps and hold downs on one for all the bits, collets and wrenches. Next I installed the drawer slides using wooden spacers to hold them off the bottom rail and then another larger spacer to position the top slides on the left. I installed the deep drawer on the right as a nice complement to the shallow ones.

A mix of deep and shallow drawers seems to be the best in my experience vs. One thing to watch out for is slide placement on the center divider. I cut a piece tall enough to fit the vertical opening for the large drawer. Then I used my table saw sled to help me cut the fronts to width. This worked really nicely and saves awkward clamping or using double stick tape. Now I could pull it out and permanently secure it from the inside and remove the outer screws.

I just cut it off in place using a SawAll. Also, since the workbench was already set in place and loaded on the top, I decided not to cut the rear middle brace. This meant, though, that the back of the cabinets would butt up against the rear brace and would not be able to rest on the rear bottom 2 x 4 brace for support. I added short 2 x 4 braces underneath the front and rear lower cross braces in order to provide support for the cabinets when the 2 x 4 begin to sag. I also added recessed 2 x 4 bracing front to back across the entire length of the bottom in order to hold the weight of the shop cabinets.

Note: I don't think this step would be needed if you are able to cut out the rear middle brace in addition to the front middle brace. I then measured the full opening size that I had available for cabinets height x depth x width. Recommendation: Start simple. Build a simple cabinet first. Suggestion: You will want to locate a good low cost source for drawer slides early on in the project. Check with any cabinet suppliers that may be close by. I cut the large pieces sides, bottom, top from a 4' x 8' sheet of plywood using a circular saw and a guide on the initial project. I have since graduated to using a kit panel saw called a Swap Saw to cut the large pieces. The simplicity of Tom's design is that you lay out the locations of the drawer slides while the left and right cabinet sides are still on the bench.

Position the left and right sides on a flat surface and layout where you want the drawer slides to be. Using a ruler, lay out where you want the slides to be on both pieces. I used Kreg pocket screws for most of my fastening, but you could just as easily use nails, wood screws, or wallboard screws. After you've done a few, you'll know what to look for. You make the front of the drawers the full width, or you can sandwich the front in between two side pieces. It is your call. I tried both. Remember that you will be adding faceplates later on and any joints will be covered up. Put it in the drawer slides. Hold it in place and slide the drawer in and out and see if it slides the way you want it should slide easily.

If it does not slide easily, re-measure and recut the drawer pieces as needed so that it does slide easily. I then proceeded to design the build the second set of cabinets using Tom Clark's design techniques. After I finished the cabinets, I immediately filled them with some of the tools that I have in my shop.

Tyler - Yes, it really important to not make the drawers too wide as they will bind. So, the simplest way to add washers would be to add them to the slides that screw to the drawer bottoms. And if you do this, you might have a problem securing the drawer slides to the bottom of the drawer as the mounting holes do not overlap the drawer bottoms very much.

These plywood sheets will form the spacers for the drawers. Measure each one to match the height and length of the space under the bench bench. If your bench is made of metal, then you'll have to pre-drill holes through the metal and attach the boards with nuts and bolts.

Install the third sheet directly in the middle of the workbench. Measure and mark the point directly in the middle of the bench. Then slide the third sheet into position at that point. Make it flush with the front and back of the bench.

Drill screws through the pocket holes to secure it to the bench. This is only if you want your drawers to be equal sizes. If you want one drawer bigger than the other, then attach the spacer accordingly. The the bench has horizontal support beams, the spacers should rest on them. If not, they can rest on the floor. Part 2. Measure the width between each spacer in the workbench. This determines the width of each drawer.
